Having problems remeshing

Hi, I’m following a tutorial on making a character and every time I remesh, my computer makes a loud fan noise/sound and then Blender shuts off. My computer specs are: computer is an XPS 8950 from Dell, CPU 12 cores, RAM - 16GB, GPU - 8GB, and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti. I appreciate if anyone here can help me figure out why this is happening. My computer is practically new. I am trying to create characters for animation.

What is the scale of the character?

Remeshing is based on a “voxel size” setting, which isn’t automatically adjusted to the size of your object. If you have a huge object, you need to increase the voxel size to make the remesh more coarse, or Blender will try to remesh with hundreds of millions of polygons and crash.

Try to start with a large voxel size and then reduce bit by bit to find how fine you can go.

Also, make sure you apply the scale on the character, because if you created it huge and scaled it down, it will still remesh like the original size if the scale isn’t applied.

That’s not very much RAM- I can easily hit 50GB of RAm usage by Blender when remeshing. What kind of RAM usage are you seeing in your task manager?

Before you remesh, press R on your keyboard and move the mouse to get a visual understanding of the density of the mesh

If the RAM is 16gb, the problem due to the lack of RAM seems to be appropriate.
Check the amount of memory used and increase the density little by little.

The more complex the character shape, the higher the density of the mesh.
Alternatively, the style of the lecturer may be that of using dense mesh.
In this case, the memory usage is high.

Thank you for your help. I did try what you suggested and I still have the same problem. Every time I remesh, the fan sound very loud as if it’s going to blow up; this happens too when I try to sculp after remeshing and even when I use texture. I added more memory ram sticks and waiting for an upgraded power supply. I spoke to Best Buy and they said my CPU will not work with Blender. My CPU is: 12 Gen Intel(R) Core™ i7- 12700. They said I needed an i7 14 gen and that would cost me $400.

I’m using an XPS 8950 Dell Computer, Nvidia Geforce RTX 3060ti, 8gb graphics card, 460W power supply. I bought the computer specifically to work with Blender. I explained to the Dell’s agent that I needed it to create animations and video editing and the specs are what they suggested and now I find that I can’t do much with blender and don’t know why. I appreciate any help anyone here can give me. Thank you.l

You have a better computer than mine and I don’t crash when remeshing.

Would you be willing to upload a file with an object you have trouble remeshing? I could see if I have any problem with it, or if there are some settings that are wrong.

Hi, Thank you for your help. I added more ram totaling to 32gb and the problem is still happening.

These are the specs of my computer: XPS 8950 Dell, Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060ti graphics card 8gb, and 460w power supply. My CPU is: 12 Gen Intel(R) Core™ i7- 12700. If you can, please let me know if the spec are not right to use with Blender. Thank you.

Hi, Thank you for your help. I have done what you suggested and I still have the problem. If you can think of something else that might be the problem, please let me know. Thank you.

Thank you for offering your help. The link below is where you can download my base model. My base is already joined together and the reason I want to remesh it is to make the neck look completely connected to the head, not just look like it’s going through it. The other problem is that I can’t use the texture or smoothing sculpt brush because the fans go off making a loud noise and Blender shuts down. Thank you.

So, the problem is that the body has 15 million triangles to begin with. Looking a the wireframe, it looks like there was a subdivision modifier on it with lots of levels and that modifier got applied.

This amount of fine detail shouldn’t have been created, at least not in the early stages of a sculpt when you are still remeshing parts together.

On my side, I can remesh it successfully if I do it through there:
remesh

Those settings remesh with a reasonable amount of detail for me and bring the model back to something easier to use.

Omgoodness, it worked! Thank you so much. No noise and I was able to texture and do everything else I needed to do. You saved me a lot of money. This has been so frustrating for me and I was so upset about having to spend more money on a fairly new computer I bought. Again, Thank you so very much.
