hawker tempest II

hi,

currently working on a ww2 plane (hawker tempest mk.2, not mk.5 :))…

so far i have this, i’m currently working on the canopy… thx for the how-to by mrys  i hope i will manage to finish this one

C&C needed and welcome, of course

hm,

i’ve battled with the canopy and came up with this.

how could i improve it?

thx

It seems that you should first cut the fuselage from top. It looks like the canopy is basically just an extruded bulge. So after cutting it’s shape, adjust the canopy itself. Don’t forget, the windshield is made of flat panels. Keep it up!

okay, reworked the canopy. it looks more real now (hopefully :))

Better, but not perfect, to be honest, the main part is a bit off. It should be more bulged at top and really noticeably bulged at sides. The fuselage needs to have bigger volume, more resembling a circle with cut sides and smoothed corners. The top of fuselage should be more straight and on sides more sharply curved into sides (in front view). But the windshield is good. Your blueprints somehow differ from mine.

hm, i modeled the plane following the first blueprint, but when i looked at the photos i found that the canopy doesn’t fit there, so afterwards i followed the blueprint no.2 (the shape and placement of the canopy).

here they are, first and second respectively.

The first one is totally of, it is a blueprint of some replica obviously. The second look like the actual plane, so stay close to it. There are also cross section of fuselage, use them, if you haven’t done so yet.

Hi Eidam!

First set of blueprints you showed are so bad, that I couldn’ imagine, that it is really Tempest . Second are better.

Check here:

http://www.airwar.ru/other/draw_fw.html

and for good references here:

http://www.hawkertempest.se/

Canopy in this plane is much easier to do as separated element (I would use this method - check my Su-7 thread, in first post is something similar

http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=100332

).

Personally I love this plane, so wait for more:yes:

Yes, http://www.airwar.ru/ is very good. I have my blueprints from there.

mrys, but you seem a bit spoiled when it comes to blueprints. But this is good, your models prove it well. The second one Eidam posted is good enough for general shape I think, but the details are lost.

 Maybe a little.

IMO good blueprints make life easier. Working on few models in the past I started with bad blueprints, and it was very difficult to fix errors after I found better. So now I’am trying to gather all documentations before start modelling.

But of course it is possible to make very good model based on not good blueprints - the only condition is: don’t trust them to much and use photographs as main reference.

To much good docs and blueprints may be also a trap: example is my Me 262. I have tons of drawings, books, photographs and spend more time analysing them then modeling;)

whoa

ok, thx, i’ll check those links…

so when i modelled the plane’s body/wings following the first one (the bad one), should i remodel the plane? or is it enough to correct errors?
and to the canopy - yes, i completely reworked it then  mostly following (already) the second blueprint, at least according to the location/size of the canopy, and some photos.

thank you thank you, this gives more euphoria to the blending!

Hmmm… I think, that start modeling from the beginning based on better blueprints is faster and less frustrating method then correct errors. And also has educational aspect

For some subsurfing solutions and ideas I recommend to check this link:

http://www.military-meshes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=89

It is for max but also Blender user can use it. Especially look at part where wing is connect to fuselage.

okay, i’ll start again…

just thought that i’ll show you the current wires of the plane, so i could keep away from errors

thx again

Looks very good to my noob-3D-eye.

Your promising project re motivated me to continue my own WW2 plane project. Thanks

On your shoots model is not fit exactly to blueprint. Did you scaled it?

About canopy: I made my version. It is not to much exact - just speed modeled for show method, that could be useful for you. Here is shoots and blend file.

xjazz: i’m glad with you

mrys: model doesn’t fit because there is already the second blueprint, not the original one.

and thanks for the model, i will try to re-model it

Starting over is a common technique, although somehow frustrating.

mrys, how do you cope with blueprint mismatch when you found out that two dimensions fits perfectly, but say the height is totally off? Then it’s very annoying to correct everything to look right. Because I haven’t seen any “blueprint” that fits, although I didn’t measured all of them.

alright,

got some time to play again with Blender and my little airplane

i’d need some help/advices on the rear wings and how to weld them more smoothly to the plane’s body.

current stage: bofy, front and rear wings finished.
next stage: make the canopy and finish the engine.
