Head Portrait

I’ve been playing with drawing for most of my life, but I’ve recently taken interest in a small comic-type project and have needed to do some serious brushing up. After cramming some Proko lessons and buying a nice, dark, chunky pencil this is what I’ve come up with:

I wanted to evoke a slightly stoic, neutral expression on a face that is strong and not particularly handsome, in the style of classic midcentury American illustration (I’ll not try to hide the fact that I was looking at some samples of Andrew Loomis’ work at the time).

This version has been colored up post-photographing, but I did have to make some minor changes to both versions in Photoshop to fix some perspective mistakes.

Didn’t I see you in Pencil Kings?
