I’ve been trying to make a height map an hour now, and it’s just not working. I’ve read the tutorials off the web, the official Blender Tutorial Guide, and the Blender knowledge base. They all say the same thing:
Create a grid, assign an image texture to it, select all vertices in edit mode, and then hit the noise button repeatedly.
So I made a grid with an image texture. Here’s a rendering of it: http://www.merrill-samuelson.com/permanent_display/shot1.png
Then I selected all vertices and pushed the noise button several times and then rendered again: http://www.merrill-samuelson.com/permanent_display/shot2.png
It just make random repeating bumps in my grid. Argh.
Here’s a shot of the blender screen itself: http://www.merrill-samuelson.com/permanent_display/shot3.png
Add the plane, subdivide, then the material and texture, then the noise and only then do you scale. Your example has the image tiled multiple times because you scaled it before the noise.
Thanks, dude, you’re right! I can’t scale the mesh before I texture and add noise.
It didn’t hit me because the textured image was being rendered just fine, so I figured it would use that mapping to make the noise. But it doesn’t.
