Hell FX shot

I’m currently doing effects work for a short film that some friends and I are working on.

There are a series of shots in the film where two people are in an elevator, looking out into a foggy, firey hell. The concept behind it is that the fog is so thick that you really can’t see much of anything, but there will be lots of scary implied stuff using sound and dim barely visible “things” whipping by in the fog.

My friend Soren came up with the basic voronoi lava floor, by the way, so I can’t take too much credit for that. But I did add texture and animation to it.

Anyway, here are the beginnings of the shot:

I’d love to get some feedback on this, so please critique away. Keep in mind, however, that I do have other effects shots to do, so I can only spend so much time on this… so if you suggest fairly complicated things, I probably won’t be able to incorporate them, even if they’re good ideas.

No problems from me. It looks incredible! You should do a tut to show us how you got the lava feel and the flying blurs.

I really like the lava, one thing that I’d change that just looks kind of tacky is the fog/smoke being that red… it kinda ruins the contrast with the floor. I think it would look really sweet with some thick black/brown smoke… especially towards the top to give a little contrast. just my 2 cents tho

I agree with Jace. You should do a tut. It looks really nice. Sweet job.

Peace

Nice job, looks great.

To me though, I need a reference point to tell what is actually moving. Though you have told us that the lava itself is moving, it could be intepreted as either the lava is moving, or the camera is moving depending on how you look at it. By providing some stationary or other reference point, it would become fairly obvious which one is moving.

Once again, nice job, and it might just be my brain which is messed up!

Thanks for the feedback guys.

forTe: in the final completed shot there will be the characters and the elevator doors as a reference point.

way2lazy2ca: I’ll keep that in mind, and I’ll ask what the director thinks. I think the original idea was for everything to be as red as possible, though.

As for a tutorial… well, I don’t really have time for that at the moment. I’d be happy to post the .blend, though. That sound good?

after looking again, I don’t think my problem was with the red so much as the fog looks very bland, especially compared to how nice your lava is. I think you should definately look at some smoke/fog tuts to help get ideas as to how to go about it. Maybe a few different shades of red ranging farther from light to dark, I don’t know, but it definately detracts from the realism of the scene imo.

one of the best fx shots created in blender, great work, looking forward to the .blend for insperation
