Help doing a 'robot'

Hi people, i was wondering if someone could help me doing a 3d work of a robot i do for a project.
I have do my best with my little knowledge…but im sure it could be done quite better with some tools i dont got in my mind.
Here is a picture of how my render goes:

And this is the real one:

(It has another top part that is not so important or difficult to model.)

Other photo without ‘middle thing’:

As u see, i still got to go better with lighting, textures and modeling.
Model:
+model better the cylinders with the ribbon teeths (i try with texture thing but get horrible results…guess i need help)
+make the bicycle chain and gears
+make the ribbon envelope

  • (optional) adding minors details…like screws, etc.
    Advice and help welcome.

Textures:
well, maybe u can think of fast ways of improving. Advice welcome.

Lighting:
Got big problems with it. I want to use radiosity to make a real feeling render, but failed. Try with half sphere emitting …failed…
Still got to try with less light and other lighting options. Advice is welcome.

I left u here the blend file, if u want it to help in a more active way or view the interior of my doom:

You can do all these things by making a basic shapes, for example a circle with teeth, and extrude, to obtain the cylindrical gears.

The same for the bicycle chain, make the shape of it all and extrude to give tickness, then give a texture (picture of the elements) to the side.

I think you don’t need to use radiosity, try adding area lights and use the internal render, or try yafray (but slower and more complicated).

Hope this help and good luck with your project

EDIT: I made quickly in 1 minute the rubber gear, you can see the attached picture as reference.
