Help getting up to speed with blender 3.1.2

Hi all!

As the title says, I need a little help getting up to speed with blender 3.1.2. I guess I should explain a bit about my background/experience with blender before I ask questions, so you know where I’m coming from…

I started out using blender 2.46 - Big Buck Bunny days. Latest version of blender I used was 2.76 when I moved away from 3D CGI as a hobby. I was a regular forum user then, was decent at rigging and helped out a few users in the 'animation & rigging section here. Since then, I moved onto FreeCAD, and spent some time playing with arduinos (microcontrollers)… Now I am returning to blender and it’s changed quite a bit in my time away.

I like the UI, but the first thing I noticed missing from the 3D view was vertices & faces counts. In 2.76 I thought that info was displayed in the 3D view. Is there anyway to display that info in the 3D view?

I’ll do a couple of simple modelling exercises and I’m sure I’ll have quite a few questions then.

Thanks for any help,
Randy

Hi, welcome back, you will find it here under “statistics”:

Thanks everyone for your replies!

@Okidoki - this is exactly what I was looking for. While the other suggestions work, they display the data in the 3d view. The status bar display is more like what I am used to from the older versions.

So my next question would be what happened to object layers? Where did they go? They used to be in the menu bar in the 3d view. In the 3d view, in object mode with an object selected, the M key used to move the object to a different object layer. Now when I do that, I get a menu for collections. Is that the replacement for object layers? If so, how do collections work?

While looking for object layers, I noticed ‘ViewLayer’ in the upper right corner. I toyed with it a bit, thinking it was object layers, but I see that it’s not. So what is ‘ViewLayer’?

Anyway, I’m off to model and learn the newest blender…

Thanks,
Randy

Object layers and groups have been replaced with collections. Welcome back.

collections are a lot more powerful then old layers !

if you import old file into latest bl
each layer should be added to a new collection

there are also several new tools
and may take time to learn where things are but easy learning.

here are some intro tut

there are short videos from Jayanam
which are very well made

here is one example

and he has many others - search web

@Modron - thank you, good to see you!

@RickyBlender - thank you, good to see you! Your english skills have improved a lot from what I remember… Congrats! But your first 3 links are broken.

Thanks to you guys, I now know what I am looking for - collections - I found what I needed at cgcookie: https://cgcookie.com/lessons/visibility-and-collections

Indeed, collections looks better than object layers!

So what is the ‘ViewLayer’ (upper-right corner of screen) used for?

Again, thank you to everyone who replied!
Randy

sorry for the links
internet is not really very reliable LOL
changing all the time so hard to keep up

happy bl

OK, looked up ViewLayers, it appears they are the old render layers, which explains why I didn’t get much of an answer as to what they are. Wrong forum section…

Anyway, just to get my feet wet, I turned this out:

Eevee render, took me a bit to get up to speed with Eevee, and I know I have lots to learn in the render area…

Next question I have is how do I control units of measure? The blender I grew up with used Blender Units and I could switch to metric or imperial units. In older versions, I thought it was in the world properties, where is it now?

Thanks,
Randy

I think it’s in one of those tabs in the upper right of the 3D window.
