Help modelling smashing glass

Hi there,
I need some help on a project I’ve just started working on which involves a wine glass full of wine being smashed on a table. I am only looking to make a still image, but I am finding it a bit of a challenge modelling the glass in the process of breaking. I have played around with the “fracture” add-on, but it always seems to either crash blender or not do anything when I press execute (this is apparent with any object no matter how many polys). Can anybody give me some help? Thanks in advance.
