Regars !

Itā€™s early in the morning here, so I may be misreading your question. But, if you want free software that can output H.264 videos, you could check out Videora iPod Converter. (It doesnā€™t only convert files for the iPod, it also lets you set up encoding settings in profiles with your desired resolution, bitrate, etc., and convert files to MPEG4 and H.264.)

Also, Blender says it can output H.264 files. Select the ā€œQuicktimeā€ file format, and then in select H.264 as the Compression Type. (I havenā€™t tried that, though.)

Hope this helps.

Try SUPER Ā© video encoder. Their webpage is a mess, but it will encode to h264 mov and itā€™s free. It seems to work pretty well. Only thing is you might want to change the default output location, it took me a while to figure out where my videos were being saved to.

Hereā€™s a link:

Most H.264 encoder programs are derivitives of x264. The ones that arenā€™t generally cost money or really suck. (both if youā€™re using Quicktimeā€™s H.264 encoder)

The main page to find x264 and related projects is here: http://www.videolan.org/developers/x264.html

Build x264 from subversion. Then build Ffmpeg from subversion with the --enable-x264 option. This will get you the video part of Quicktime mp4 files. My current build of Ffmpeg-SVN will not produce useful audio output for Quicktime though. I use MP4Box from GPAC for that (another VLC project).
