I’m not sure if this is the right place to post this message (if not, mods please accept my apologies and move to appropriate forum.)
I have a project which I need to complete pretty quickly which involves creating 2 x reconstructions of some old buildings. I tried to do this myself but I just don’t have time to learn Blender to a sufficient level of expertise. I thought I would ask you guys as there is some great work here.
The first reconstruction is of a medaeval manor house with wooden beams (see attached images for my starting effort, this should give you an idea of the beams etc.). The finished render that I need would actually have 3 of these buildings in kind of a C shape and also surrounded by a moat.
The second one is of an old 18th century brick water mill, very similar to the one which can be found at http://www.schoolsliaison.org.uk/sarehole/sarehole.htm but with some slight layout changes, but this should give you an idea of materials, layout etc.
Initially I would invite you to give me a rough cost and timescale for creating the reconstructions. Please include samples of your work which may be relevent. I can provide more information/measurements to any interested parties.
Are these going to be interactive walkthrough. Meaning are you supposed to be able to walk INTO the building using the mouse or the keyboard. Or is it suppose to just give you an exterior view from a still image. Or is the view suppose to be and animated exterior view?
Thanks for your reply. Initially they will just be still renders, from different angles, of the exteriors to show what the buildings would have looked like.
Hi!
I am in a project where we reconstruct buildings by using Blender. Here are some tips you may find useful:
-If you have to make complicated curves (like floor plans), then use Inkscape and import plain .svg-files into Blender. This can save a LOT of time.
Here is the latest script that makes the trick: http://jmsoler.free.fr/didacticiel/blender/tutor/cpl_import_svg_en.htm
Remember to save PLAIN SVG, not Inkscape’s own svg!
if you have cross-sections, use them as reference picture in Blender. By dividing scene into several windows, you can use severall background images.

and finally, give your objects reasonable names. Then it is easy to append objects from file to file.
I’m afraid that I don’t have tips for that (moat). I would use displace and subsurfed plane for geometry. You are probably familiar with displace, but if you are not, here’s a link: http://www.arthis.jyu.fi/blender3d/ground.php
It’s in finnish, but the pictures will tell what’s the idea.
