Help needed with adapting PSL Rednelb rig to existing character

I have been trying to rig and pose a character for a childrens story. The model was sculpted and retopoed in 3dcoat, and brought into Blender for rigging. The hands are modified from the hand geometry in the rednelb rig from pepelanddotcom

I attempted to parent the rig to my own character design which is shown in the attached jpegs. I also uploaded the resultant blend file to the following location:

As you can see the head is severely distorted. Part of the problem is that I am not entirely certain about what all the bones are doing. If anyone can point me in the right direction, your help would be appreciated.

Looks like you have scaled the rig in pose mode to fit it to your mesh. You want to change the rig in edit mode instead.
