Help with basic modeling.

Hello I have been trying to follow this tutorial here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QT1GNMevfc and so far I’am having a terrible time understanding what I’m doing wrong. At about 7 minutes in he completes the outline of the mouth. It looks like the entire time hes staying within one plan. Which I thought I set mine up to be by pressing 1 on the keyboard and staying within that view. But for some reason I go to complete the mouth and its its showing me the reverse side of the faces of the poly and isn’t staying a 2D face. Also when deleting or extruding I get constant issues with the program creating extra vertices hidden within each other. And just to try to make sense of it the reverse side of the faces are a purpleish color and the front faces are grey. I don’t if that’s okay to have happen or what. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You need to give us a .blend file or some screenshots.

You can flatten your mesh by selecting all the vertices, pressing scale(S), choosing an axis(X, Y or Z) and then aligning (Num0)

As for the darker color, the darker side of a face should be on the inner side of the model. They are called normals. You can fix it by selecting all the faces and pressing (ctrl+N) to make normals consistent, you can also manually select the faces and press (W) and select “flip normals” from the dropdown menu.

Darrin is a good channel to follow. He is definitely sticking to creating a ‘2d’ plne of polys initially, I’d suggest you have accidentally created other geometry which is confusing things. Given this is so early in the process, I’d simply delete and start again.
If you are seeing dark grey faces, then the chances are the normals are inverted, so select the polys and hit CTRL+N to normalise them.
As GrimZA says though, without a blend file, we couldn’t say exactly what the issue is.

I think you guys answered everything for me! I guess I didn’t noticed the whole process of flipping normals which seems to be pretty important haha. Thanks guys, really appreciate it!

No problems, as I say, worth checking out some of Darrins other videos on stuff like hard modelling surfacing, he has an “Alleyway”, “container” and “cargo hold” series of videos which are well worth the time.
