Help with making a platform for non solid object or any creative ways to solidify for 3D printing

Greetings Blender world!

This is my first post so I apologise if its too much or not enough information… please go easy on me =)

I have been trying for months to try to figure this out on my own and am going nuts trying to figure this out. I have created a gaussian splat of a friend’s dog asleep on their couch, the model turned out really well but, it’s just a plane and not solid. I want to be able to solidify the object for 3D printing by basically creating a platform the entire object is sitting on, with using photos i’ve taken of the sides of the couch as the material once the base is built. I’ve tried to use boolean modifiers to create sides, which after 100 shots of coffee and many frustrating experiences I’ve been able to create sides, but am stuck creating a front and back due to strange behaviours of boolean operators… I have joined the sides with the original object but attempts to make a face or back create crazy artefacts and unexpected crashes. I have tried the native tool and bool tool. I am wondering if there is just a better way overall to go about creating a nice square platform of the object Addy (the dog) and couch are part of that is solid for 3D printing. I was thinking perhaps gradually smoothing out each side of the couch to a flat plane and then sculpting the base and using the solidify modifier may work, but I cant find a way to gradually bring the surface of the couch which is not flat to gradually be a flat surface. I would love any thoughts on how I may be able to get this to work. My friends dog has had surgery for cancer and I think this would be a really amazing wonderful gift for them, plus the experience of making and learning how to do this would be educational and bump my experience points in Blender and modelling =). Below is a link to the blender files with the two project files of Addy on the couch- the first with only some edits to make the front and sides smoother (have not edited the back yet not sure what to do with that and may just trim the pillows out), and the version with the sides I’ve managed to add using the boolean tools (you’ll notice the sides are hollow which probably isnt what I want either). Thank you SO much for any help, pointers, advice or laughs at what I am attempting to do =P

Thank you for any help!! =)

Preserving or rebuilding the shape of the sofa will not be easy.
The simplest way is to cut out the unnecessary parts.

You can cut it using Carver (basic Addon), and after cutting, you can make the bottom part.

Sorry for all the deletes something went wrong with the reply haha… thank you for the pointer, I’m hoping to preserve more of the original object but this is a great cool I didn’t know exited and perhaps I can use it if I can’t get another method. Thank you for the help i really appreciate it =)

On other solutions.

  1. Create an object for Boolean.
Prepare a modeling with the open top, the normal direction of the face inward.

  2. Select Exact from the Boolean.
When you do this, it’s combined in the same form as the image.
Now apply the boolean to change it to mesh and delete the unnecessary parts.

After that, some cleanup work is needed.

※ If the shading shade works strangely, remove the setting of the marked area

eqweqw.blend (2.9 MB)

This file is the same as the attachment (without sofa) above, but it has a larger area.

This is brilliant thank you so much for this !! :star_struck::hatching_chick: happy holidays !!
