I am new to blender and have recently downloaded blender 2.68. I am trying to create a model, by watching this video:

But at 6:41 how does he select the middle of the arm? I was able to do it once on accident, but now I need to do the same with the stomach and cannot.

If you follow the onscreen keys - JW is using Z key as a toggle constantly to see ‘inside’ the skin mesh. Btw to select anything - use RIGHT muose button (or change that in User Preferences).

You can also disable the “Limit Selection to Visible” button :
So you can see the vertices inside of the skin structure without needing to switch to wireframe display
