Help With Normal Mapping

Hey guys. Ok so I was told to use normal maps no my current project. I"ve tried following some tutorials to understand but with no help.

Thats the one im using right now.

My problem is, when I go to apply the map, nothing is coming out. Well, I either get nothing, or with the “Nor” slider all the way up I get the image below.

Someone help me out here please?? I am not doing something right, or do I just not understand the concept? :confused:

Under the texture buttons F6 click Normal map

Ok cool thx. just messed around with that.

But, I have to have it turned off for it to work, not sure why. =/
