Help with Smoke/Fire sim

I’m having issues with a fireball I’m trying to create. I keep getting these weird lines in my fire as seen below. The smoke forms fine and has the nice billowing effect I’m after, however the fire does not form the same rounded billow which is what I’d like it to do.

The 3 round spheres are my particle emission/explosion sources and I’ve attached screens of both it’s Particle and Smoke Physics settings. Any help would be much appreciated as nothing I do seems to correct the odd shapes/patter formed by the fire.

Can you post a link to a simplified blend with just the domain, etc…?

It looks like your resolution may be too low on the sim, and it’s also possible you have unapplied scale on your domain causing the vertical distortions. Make sure you apply scales on all (Well every object really) but definitely domains, emitters, etc. select object(s) ctrl a. You can see scales in the properties panel on right (hit n)

Thanks for the response! I’ll go and check the scale on the domain and emitters then as I definitely have not been doing that. In the meantime before you’d posted I was making a render with the HQ Smoke Resolution Divisions bumped from 1 to 5. Here it is, with the line patterns still highly visible.

I’ll work on getting a simplified blend out here as well…

looks like you need some subframe calculations to get more accuracy and less artifacts. Is this sim moving fast?

Yeah it’s an explosion so it bursts out immediately within a couple frames then slows as the sim moves forward. But yeah, I figured it would be fine for subframes as there were no independent projectiles hurtling out with smoke trails, but the whole thing is being projectiled out so makes sense that’s maybe the cause. I’ll bump it from 0-10 and see what happens.

i also applied the scale to everything and it did t have much effect. I’ll see if this works and if not I’ll post the .blend

I guess upping the Subframes from 0 to 10 is a huge bump as baking completely stalls and wont even produce past the first frame (left it for half a day) and I have to Ctrl, Alt Del to quit Blender. Does that sound right? I’ll take it to 2 anyway and see if that makes a difference.

Managed to get things to bake at 7 subframes on the smoke/fire emitters. Bake files are huge but that definitely did the job! Thanks for all the help!

Glad to see that helped, but I don’t think you need 7, which is huge. Does 3 to 5 work?
