If I hide verts using ‘h’ or w/hide, in wireframe mode I still see a “ghosted” outline of the verts/faces.
Is there a way to hide the “ghosts” too ?

Unfortunately not. That’s a new thing since about 2.38 (I think). Older versions didn’t have the ghosting.

I haven’t done much modelling, but I thought hide …well hid things.
Seems a dumb idea to me, you ask it to hide, but it sorta/kinda hides
