Hiding a bone in Armatures Bones panel

Hi, I am doing the Rigging & Skinning tutorial in The Essential Blender book.
At one part it says to hide the Master bone with the far right layer button , which is 16,
in the Armature Bones Panel.
I did that, but further along I have to link the Spine base & master bone, it says I Shift-LMB on the 16th layer button to show ithe Master Bone.
When I do that the Armature Bones panel just disappears. Can anyone help me to get the Master bone as I have spent hours getting to this point & I will be well sick if I have done something stupid & wasted my time on it.

I think you’re selecting/viewing the 16 OBJECT layers (in the 3d viewport)
What you need to see is the 16th BONE layer. it’s under the armature tab in the editing (F9) panel. was that the problem?

Hi, Thanks for the reply, but I was cliicking away in the wrong order. After selecting the master bone I should have clicked on the Hide button then Ctrl-Shift the 16th layer button, then it can be opened by using the Hide button.
If there is a wrong way to do it, I’m your man to find it.
Thanks Mac
