Hiding faces from a script

Is it possible to hide and unhide parts of the mesh from inside a blender script? Ive done several searches and read the API. The only promising things I was able to find was

face.flags = face.flags | NMesh.FaceFlags.HIDE

but this seems to do nothing so is there something else I should try or is this just not possible?

This would need to be added ie the python API.

It would realy be quite easy to do.
