High Detail Y-Wing Fighter

I’ve not finished my existing project, but it’s so much fun to start new things. So here’s a WIP of this. I’m still at the stage of blocking in the main greeble geometry, and then I’ll do another pass, putting in all the really fine details. I’m thinking of making a nice hangar scene for it when it’s done.

That’s some incredible modeling I can’t wait to see the finished product.

Very nice! No crits here

Excellent job so far! I would love to see where you got such detailed reference from!

Looks great, I don’t remember seeing a 3d model of an Y-wing with this much detail before.

Thanks. I’m using a few pictures from the official Star Wars website that show the original models in various stages of completion, and a lot of second-hand reference - quite a few people seem to have done very detailed physical models after studying the original props. There’s a lot of good shots of these replicas online, so I’m comparing various ones and trying to replicate what I think’s going on as best I can. I have to admit, though, a lot of it’s just me making up something that looks roughly in line with quite blurry shapes.

Here’s an update. There’s a lot of new detail compared to the previous image, but not all of it’s visible here - the underside’s now half done, for instance. Still a lot more to do.

Amazing work, is it all same object or do you do combine many objects? I have never thought about it but now it struck me: how on earth you are going to texture something like that? I have long dreamed of modeling B-wing so I’m interested to know.

woah. woah. woah. seriously amazing work  how are you keeping the topology clean? are all those details separate pieces?

that’s the photon torpedo blaster set on top of the cockpit, right? (I’ve played the original X-Wing, and it seems to me that the photon blasts were close together on the Y-Wings…and the Ys had Ion cannons too, which was useful)

I always wonder why the Y-Wings are so…slim. they don’t seem to be built with sturdiness in mind.

anyway, I’m branching off here… really looks awesome, can’t wait to see the final shots

The basic structure is three main objects - the head, the body and the nacelles. These include the larger and more simply-shaped details. The smaller ones are separate objects, but usually all the details in one area are grouped together as a single object. Topology’s not really my speciality. I’m doing my best, but it gets a little messy in places.

As for how I’m going to texture it, I’m really not sure at the moment. It’s going to be a bit of a pain, for sure. I’m currently thinking a quite large tiling texture for the body, possibly with some dirt painted on as an overlay. The head should be fairly straightforward.

I think the gun on the top of the cockpit is the ion cannon/laser. I’m not particularly interested in, or knowledgeable about the made-up technical details of these things, but the proton torpedo tubes are definitely on the underside of the head.

Topology is a pain, that’s for sure  I’ve been working on my NES project, and I get the same thing as you - even though I’m doing my best to keep the mesh clean, it gets dense and sometimes messy :frowning:

sounds cool

lol, I know hardly anything about all that, I just based my assumptions on the original X-Wing game (which actually had 3D models, is was interesting to see)

really looks good  do you think you post a few screenshots of the mesh? I’m curious to see how you’re building it

Same here! I would love to see wireframes:eyebrowlift:

Wow, that is absolutely amazing! I just found some Star Wars blueprints, but I think I’ll start out with a landspeeder.

I’ll post wireframes when it’s done. Here’s the latest WIP. New details to the engines and cockpit. I’ve also got the windows made, but for some reason they’re rendering opaque on Blender’s internal renderer so theyre turned off for this shot. Possibly it’s because I’ve modelled the thickness so I can use LuxRender.

I’ve also done a quick colour test with some rough UV unwrapping and placeholder textures. The finished one will be much better than this. I just wanted an idea what it looked like in something other than white.

woah…really awesome texturing, even if they’re placeholders  and your detail-work is amazing, must really take some patience to model all those bits…

More work done on the bottom. Just the underside of the wings to go and the first detail pass is finished. But that means I need to do the landing legs, and I haven’t been able to find any decent reference. Does anyone happen to know where they connect, either from a photo or from a toy or model or something? I know there’s one at the front and two at the back, but the images I’ve seen aren’t very clear on where they are. I’m fairly sure the front one comes from the head, but I don’t know where in relation to the intake vent thing. And are the back ones on the main hull, wings or engines? I think in the absence of evidence to the contrary I’ll go for towards the front of the head and on the wings, but it’d be nice to get it right if anyone knows. As for what the legs actually look like, I’m guessing they’re much the same as the X-Wing ones, but reference is pretty scarce on that too.

Detail here, detail there, detail everywhere, that model is just oozing in class!

Thanks. Front leg now added, and a placeholder environment just to see what it looks like not floating in void.

awesome work!!!

I’ve started proper texturing work on the main hull now. I may still add more detail components over the top but I want to get a sense of whether it’s necessary, or whether it’s fine just using textures. I’m still probably going to use Luxrender for the final image, so the shaders aren’t final. I’m working on getting it UV unwrapped and painted first. There’s also going to be grime and probably scratch layers as well. The grime’s applied on the neck section, but I haven’t done it for the rest yet. I also need to do some texture painting on the model to iron out a few UV seams. Still, I’m quite happy with how it’s going.
