Home Network

Can anyone give me some pointers on setting up the next stage of my home network? Here’s what I’ve got:

  1. Windows XP box
  2. Windows 2000 box
  3. two Windows 98 boxes

I have a pretty classic set-up. They’re hooked up to a 4-port router which is hooked up to cable modem. They see internet fine…no problem. The XP box sees shared drive on 2000 no problem. My 2000 box DOESN’T see XP box. haven’t even tried with Win98 boxes yet.

My goal is to set up network rendering. Any pointers on how to get all of my boxes to see each other? Thanks!!

Get more copies of XP

I’m actually thinking about that. Although my Win98 boxes are probably too slow. On the other hand, its no great loss if they are not in the rendering farm.

either that or more copies of 2000.
I trust xp as far as i can throw a ball.

Well, that’s part of the problem. I’d prefer NOT to get another copy of XP, if for nothing else because of $$. Also, 2000 works fine for me.

I’m guessing there are just a few more settings I have to manually set in 2000. This is not a problem but I’d just like to know where to look.

K, all the standard Stuff… ie the subnet mask 255.255.255.0, ip addresses with the first 3 bytes the same (192.168.0.X) workgroup all the same.

If you’ve got these done, can you ping the other computers(using ip addresses)? (Start > Run “ping 192.168.0.yournumber” where the last digit is the ip of the other box).

If that works, see if you can ping the comp name.

/edit reply if you need more help…

ok this is how you do it.

set your XP computer as the host or master (i dunno the techniqual terms)

this machine should be on 100% of the time. now this machine will have an IP address.

in the settings of the other machines make sure they DON’T HAVE AN IP ADDRESS. and select the option for them to be assigned an IP address by the XP box.

we have a home netwrok of XP-XP-ME-LINUX. and no problems setting them up.

on the XP machine you can run the home network wizard which can create a networking disk that you cna put into the other machines, it should be able to set up the options on the other machines for you.

Alltaken

Thanks Folks!

I’ll give it a try!!!

hmm, DHCP is probably a bit over-the-top for such a small network. it’s easier to just assign static IP adresses to the machines
