Hooks fall off, how does that work?

I have a subd plane with a hook at the corner vert. How can I get a falloff effect to move more of the verts? Setting the falloff value at the modifier doesnt seem to work.

You’ll need to select a vertex group in the modifier, and weight paint the verts according to how much you want the parts of the plane to deform. You’ll also need to “assign” (on the modifier) in edit mode all the verts you want to be deformed. I find I usually have to hit “Reset” (but make sure you only hit that when the hook is at its original position and hasn’t been moved), but I don’t work with hooks that often, so I’m not sure what’s considered standard procedure there.
