How Blender helped me win CultureShiftAthens

Culture Shift is an event that was organized at Athens (1-3rd of April) by Google and the British Council to bring together designers, coders and people from the business and culture sector to promote art and culture through the use of modern technologies.

I entered the competition as a technical artist as I am half a 3d artist / half a coder . At the time I had no idea what to expect , no team and no clue that it was a competition. I was fortunately enough to meet 4 amazing people , one fellow designer (Graphic designer) one pro from the business sector (she is one holding the microphone in the photo) and one from the education sector. So after 3 days of hard work we manage to get the second place with our game Questory . Its a treasure hunt game that encourages kids and grown up to visit archaeological sites for the seeking of evidence that will lead them to the treasure. This way you can have fun and learn at the same time.

My part apart from helping to formulate an idea that would be easy to sell to the critics was to design a small mini game which would be a prototype for other mini games inside the game to spice up the mystery and the challenge of the whole game. Our business member made the slides for how to fund and sell the idea to customers, our designer designed the UI of the game, our education expert formulate the text and overall approach to the learning side of the game.

Our presentation was about Knossos a very well known city of an ancient civilization named “Minoan” and I used a bull head to make a small animation video of how a user pulling spears around could push the bull head back to reveal the next clue to help his or her treasure hunt.

I did not design the bull head since I had only an hour to come up with this , I used a model I found under creative commons on the internet and I just added some materials to it, made all the rest and of course animated it.

The original model can be found here

here is our team doing the presentation , I am the guy on the left and there is also another member not visible in this photo

and here is my animation

End of June we will join the winners of Culture Shift Cyprus and Culture Shift Mandrid for a 2 day stay at Google Youtube Campus at London for some very intensive education on the subject of promotion of commercial software applications and much more.

So a big thank you to Blender developer for allowing me to create a very simple animation in a very short time and making Blender so great.

End of June Blender is going to Google
