How can I hide a part of an object in texture paint mode?
Im painting a mushroom working on the stem but the cap is in the way, how can I hide the cap of the object?

Use the mask modifier for that.
I think the first answer here is what you are looking for:
EDIT: Posted at the same time. I think either way might work. The above method does not require a modifier.
Sorry thats not what im after.
I need to see the stem of the mushroom. The cap of it is covering the upper part of the mushroom stem which makes it difficult to paint as I need to tilt the camera to see under. Its like trying to paint armpit hair while in A pose. (Best example I can think of)

It was my misunderstanding of that feature. I had it backwards
I assumed you could hide those faces and paint. Sorry. Yeah use the mask modifier.
