How can I keep my add-ons installed after an update?

I keep having to reinstall my add-ons after large updates. Is there a way I can keep them all installed or do I just have to deal with it?

Hi I just watched a video today about this and it showed once you fire up your new version that on the splash screen there is a text link to copy settings from previous version. I just updated a small update today and all my add-ons etc were updated automatically. I also found this thread What's the proper way of updating blender 2.8 to keep settings?

Go (for Windows) “C:\Users<User>\AppData\Roaming\Blender Foundation\Blender” and copy files for old version to new version directory.
