How do I delete a material?

I know this sounds stupid but how do you delete a material so it stops showing up on the dropdown.

The cross just removes it from the current object.

I have tried using the data browser from within blender (shift+f4) and you can select a material and press X, a popup will ask if you want to remove it but nothing happens when you accept.

It becomes a problem on a big project because you cant get rid of the extra materials (I know you can rename and use them) but it still gets messy.

Does anybody know how to do this?

hmm, not sure about this since I dont have access to Blender where I am at the moment…

use the databrowser as you said (shift+f4) but instead of X-key, use R-key, or with any configuration

I think that will work, not still sure, but try it!

Remove material from every object so it is not assained to any object, save your work, close blender, open it again and open your file and unassained materials have disapeared.

No need to close-open blender, just open some other scene, then open the previous one again.

Is there a way to find the object that is using your unwanted material?

I could spend hours looking through a large scene for the material.

Hi,

No need to even open another scene; just save your work with Ctrl+W and then use Ctrl+O

Bye,

use the OOPS window.

use the OOPS window.

how do you use the OOPs window. Pressing x in the window does nothing.

Don’t use to OOPS to delete, you use it to find which objects the material is linked too. And you can select object by right clicking in the OOPS too, so…

To be a little more descriptive:

In the Oops Window, you can utilize the following keys:

Shift_[L] key selects the next box or “parent” of the currently selected box. For example: Select a texture box, Shift_[L] will select the material box, Shift_[L] again will select the mesh (or what ever), and once again will select the Object box(s).

[L] works exactly the same as Shift_[L], but in the other direction.

This helps to seperate the boxes if your Oops window is a real mess.
You can also try Shift_[S] or Alt_[S] to Shuffle or Shrink the selected boxes in the Oops window (Personally, I haven’t found these to do too good a job of tidying up the Oops window, and normally I end up doing a lengthy manual sorting to tidy things up. If anyone has any ideas, I’d like to hear them )

Finally, Ctrl_Right Mouse Click can be used to set the active object in the Oops window.
