How do I get rid of the middle seam when mirror modelling?

I am making a character, and mirrored half of it, but was wondering how do I get rid of the middle seam?

In the new 2.40 alpha releases there is a new mirror modifier which doesn’t show the seam. In older versions the seam with be visible until you join the two meshes and remove doubles.


Q: How do I join the meshes is it the key “J” in edit mode?
Then I would hit remove doubles?


Actually if you mirror in edit mode then you can just go ahead and hit remove doubles.

If you use alt-d or shift-d in object mode, then you must press ctrl-j and then go into edit mode and remove doubles and recalc normals if necessary.
