How do I go about modelling this?

I am currently modeling the VSS Vintorez and have problems modelling the stock of the weapon.

Here is the image of the stock.

I’ve tried using boolean to carve in the holes but adding the smooth subdivision modifier screws up the mesh. I am a novice, or even a newbie in blender.
All help appreciated, and, if you’re up for it, you can PM me for the .blend file and model the stock for me which would be of great convenience.

Thank you

I think it would be easiest to start with a plane like in the image and just extrude each section of the stock.

He’s asking about the the rear of the stock.

This part i think.

Term for the black part is “recoil pad”. Stock is a wooden part (exactly where Cube is dropped).

Beginning is fine - Cube is in scene and image is set as a background. What does not look fine is - cube is small, covers just a tiny part of the stock. It should have Mirror modifier too.

After you draw a cube all over the stock shape, look where you’d need cuts to properly make just a stock contours; add loops just for this purpose.
After this is done take Knife tool and draw approximate shape including both openings; dividing middle part can be easily extruded later. Do not put a lot of new verts while using knife. Even 4 vertices in imaginary corners (not taking in account rounding) will do.

To make rounded corners - select vertex and Ctrl-Shift-B bevel it (mouse scroll). Again, do not overdo adding new verts. 2 new for a corner is enough. Smooth contour edges along the stock using edge bevel Ctrl-B (and scroll mouse wheel). Do this for outside and opening.

Now when there is a shape and place to start with add some loopcuts top/bottom for the middle part in opening. Select faces and W key - Bridge; this will make the initial shape, some loopcuts would do the rest.

Add Subsurf modifier and look for some errors in edge flow, correct what’s terribly looking by deleting and recreating parts. Do not forget to switch off Subsurf modifier (eye icon) while doing modeling - sometimes it looks ok if Subsurf is on but the geometry behind is a total mess.

Modeled it for you, you can see in the second layer of the file the active objects I used to cut out this shape. This is called non-destructive modeling. I find it very useful if not necessary for almost all types of hard surface modeling. You can add edge loops yourself, I believe you’ll find many things interesting in this way of modeling.
