How do I make "spurts" of fluid?

Yes, I know the title sounds really provocative, but bear with me here. I was drawing up little scenes in my head and imagined a somewhat gruesome scene of a monster during a sword fight getting its arm or even its neck cut and arterial blood spurting out with every heartbeat. Well, I started wondering how to do this so I set up a simple experiment with a sphere as the inflow and a domain and a wall for the blood to splatter against. Thing is, I have run into some trouble. For some reason I cannot get a realistic looking spurt of blood to erupt from the inflow emitter. It always comes out looking like a big glob. When it hits the wall it doesn’t stick properly. Worse yet it’s introducing a strange effect where the fluid will stick in a strange horizontal “slatting” effect at regular vertical intervals as in the screenshot below. What I initially thought to do was keyframe the sphere with a constant interpolation to suddenly go from size zero to size 3 for a few frames and then go to size zero again to produce that squirt. But as mentioned before, it only looks like a single glob instead of a real squirt of fluid that I’m trying to get.

The question is, what would be the best method to get arterial blood squirting and how would I get rid of that ugly horizontal sticky effect that’s showing up below?

I don’t mean to sound like a jerk, but this has been sitting here for a while and no one’s bothered to step up and give a possible answer?

It’s probably because nobody has a really good answer for you. It’s only been a couple days…

First things first though, you have to increase the resolution of your fluid sim to eliminate the glob. Hereis a good link explaining some of that part. It will take much longer to bake though, MUCH longer.

Is that just a simple plane the fluid is sticking too, or has it been sub-divided, the resolution might help with that too. I’m not sure how the stickiness is affected by edges.

As far as stopping and restarting the fluid sim, that’s not something I’ve seen done so can’t help there, why not introduce some cuts to the action to make production easier, also you might think about rendering your frames then taking them into after effects, photoshop or gimp or another program and creating the blood there in 2D. It is all about the story, sometimes you gotta cheat to get the desired effects. You don’t have to do everything in one program, in fact you’d be hard pressed to find any studio that does everything in just one program. It is about the essence of the action to tell the story, not a reproduction of reality.
