How do I select a BSDF shader in Blender 2.77 under Cylcles Render?

I cannot find where to select a BSDF shader under the materials tab.

In all the tutorials i see there is a “Surface” section that you can open and you can select the type of shader you want to apply. I see the the Preview section and the Render Pipeline Options, and Diffuse, Specular, Shading and all the rest below that but nothing that says “Surface” that I can open to select the drop-down menu with the different type of shaders I can choose, like “Emission” or “BSDF”

I am enclosing a screenshot with the area circled that I am referring to. I got to it earlier by accident but now that I am trying to find it again I cannot. Thanks for helping this total idiot out!

On the top menu, you need to set the render engine to Cycles. Right now it’s set to ‘Blender Render’.

When in Cycles, you will have access to all BSDFs

Ok thanks…I had trouble when in cycles also…but just saw that I had to select “Object” under my materials. I thank you for pointing out that I had Blender Render in my screenshot. I was still lost in the Cycles mode also…but I just chanced upon this…switching it from “data” to “object” and then the Shader selection button appeared with Diffuse DSDF showing as the default option and the Diffuse BSDF node appearing.

Can’t thank you enough.

you could also add shaders from the nodes editor
try the add menu on bottom header

Yep…you’re right Ricky. This means I was looking there, under ADD, in the Node Editor while still in Blender Render mode. This all teaches me that I must slow down and look at “everything” while learning this program. I was adding bones the other day and i was parenting some to keep offset but when in pose mode they never rotated around their own median point…and hours later, after tearing what little hair I have left…out, I realized I had “pivot around cursor” selected at the bottom of the window.

Thanks Ricky…I actually have been signed up with CGcookie and have those tutorials. I just get lost in the forest and can’t see the little trees or branches sometimes. Thanks again for all your help and patience.
