Let’s say I have a selected set of faces:
Other than switching to edge mode and deselecting the edges I don’t want, how can I select just the outer edges of the entire group of faces, like this?

Try sepecting those faces, then switch to edge select mode, so that the edges are selected, and then you can deselect the ones that you don’t want (between selected faces).
You can use the paintbrush select tool for larger spaces too (press C to activate in edit mode, and hold ctrl to deselect edges)
I’m not sure if there is an actual feature that could do it, but it would nice if there was.
Edit: looks like the post below has a better answer
Select > Select Loops > Select Boundary Loop
AFWS – perfect! That’s exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!
