How do I show de-selected faces in uv mapping but

How do I show de-selected faces in uv mapping when I select one face in the 3d view.
Below is a diagram of what I need.

Is this possible? And if not. How the hell do you work in this?
I could swear Blender had this back in Potato mode.

There is an icon on the uv window - Sync uv and mesh selection (a square showing vertices)

Disadvantage - you can’t use CTRL-L in the uv window, but it continues to work in 3d window. Finding where uv faces belong is a whole lot easier now.
