How do you do an alpha map?

I want to know so I can do grass and hair and stuff like that. I get a UV texture and press alpha, but it does not do what an alpha map is supposed to do. Help.

I don’t know very much about the alpha effects but I do know that if you have any black on the image and press “Add” on the face buttons, the black will not show up.

Hope this helps

It doesn’t really. Sorry. What I need to know is how to get rid of a particular color, not make the image semi- transparent.

the texture has to be a format that supports alpha(.png is good) and then in photoshop or gimp you make the part you want to be invisible transparent, then load then into blender, UV map the texture to whatever you want it on, and press “alpha”(and copy draw mode if it’s applied to more than one face) in the texture face buttons. Hope that helps.

yes you need to use any filetype that supports an alpha layer like .png, .tga etc

This can be done in gimp

I use png for alpha texture (easy and small).
Open a picture in gimp (or photoshop)
Add a layer mask.
Paint in black to have transparency.
Save the picture.
Load it in blender.
Put it on a face.
Press alpha.
That’s all.

Thank you all. I will try this.

It worked. Thank you.

Hmmm, I tried it, but when I press alpha nothing happens. :-? The black part is still there . . .

Make sure you have the picture is alpha and in the formats described above.

Click alpha and then click copy draw mode.

Do you use gimp or photoshop ?

I use Pixia which saves in png, but I also use Xn View to change it to tga. In my texture I’m using tga. I drew a black background for transparency. I UV mapped it to several planes-I’m using the card method-and clicked alpha in the texture face window. I also clicked on copy draw mode, but neither seemed to do anything.

I remember tga must be 32 bits. I think you loose alpha information when converting png to tga.
Why don’t you use gimp ? (it’s free software too  .
I’ll try to make a texture with pixia to see where’s the trouble.

Ok, I see now.

But I found that just using the fur strands behind a transparent background in tga worked just fine. I didn’t have to use a mask or anything. Just punch alpha and viola!

Yeah, I use pixia mainly. I tried to download gimp first but I had problems installing it, so that’s why. It’s all right though. Pixia’s free too and I can use just about the same stuff.

Don’t forget tga textures could be bigger than png (weight).

Ok, numaQ. I see now.

I’ve run into another problem though. Nothing shows up in the UV editor when I load something in png.

I remember trouble like this with an old version of blender…
Png works fine in 2.36. Could be the depth (8/16/24/32 bits) of the texture…

Hmm, that’s odd. Because I am using 2.36 . . . :-?

Would you know how to change the depth?

Could you post the png (or url)?
I’ll check it and tell you the depth.
The depth COULD be change when you create or save the picture in your paint program.

I tried to use pixia but, … I’ve failed…
Need more time to learn this soft.

Hmm, I don’t know the least about urls . . . :frowning:
