How do you make a spotlight?

Hi

I have been trying to figure out how to do a spotlight like
in this picture here from Half Life 2.

I haven’t been able to figure it out.
Any ideas?

Change the Lamp to a Spot and enable Halo in the Lamp buttons - Shadow and Spot panel.

I tried those and got horrible results.
All the spotlamp does is make a cone it doesn’t even look like a real spotlight.

The one in HL2 is probably an alpha mapped cone - you can do the same thing in Blender. Just create a cone, then map a blend texture to the alpha channel along its length.

However, if you play with the volumetric light settings, you should be able to get good results. See this page for details:

You have to actually put a mesh in front of the light to obscure it’s path. Also you shadows must be buffered, ray trace does not work.

Hello

The HL2 SpotLight is what I want or rather trying to make.
I tried what you suggested but did get anything looking like the HL2 Spot.
I don’t know what buttons to use.
Can someone please explain how to set this up or post a blende file?

Here’s a quick example pic and blend.

Suzanne is under a halo spotlamp. The crudely modelled light on the right has a lightbeam made from a modified tube, textured with a couple of blend textures for alpha and a cloud texture for colour.
