I’ve seen a lot of people do this, and even have some .blends with it done, but I can’t decipher teh method. How is it managed?
I am not sure about what you are saying but I think these two methods will get you started.
Softer shadows can be achieved by using GI in Yafray. Like Hemilight with full processing (if you are using blender internal plugin for yafray) or skydome.
You can also try out spot lamp, by adjusting the smoothness in the samples.
Both will produce different result and you will get to know which one to use.

hmm… sounds like it’s teh rightthing, except how do I “adjust the smoothness in the samples”? I have a point light with ray shadows on, and 6 samples (this appears to do nothing), and a photonlight in exactly the same spot. The shadow is perfactly sharp, and I have Full GI enabled (with cache but w/o photons.) I’ll try the hemilight now, thanks!
