how do you select only half the model

is there an easy way to select half the model- I want to restore symmetry, so I need to select the one half to delete it

In front view> Box select the half you want to delete - but make sure you can see the vertices on the back side of the mesh (the little button that looks like a box next to face select mode in the 3d window header)

then press X
