How do you "unjoin" meshes?

I used the join command on several meshes, but now I want to separate them. I cannot find an inverse to the CTRL-J join command.

Just select the piece you want to separate, and press P, for seParate.

Matt

Go into edit mode, press A to select all vertices, or select a single vertice from the object you want to seperate, and press ctrl L to select the rest of the attached vertices, and then depending on which one you did, you can pres P for either seperate all loose parts, or seperate selected. This is for the latest version, other versions donā€™t have ā€˜seperate all loose partsā€™.

Good, that works in edit mode. If you are not in edit mode, pressing P gives a message that the game engine is disabled.

You must be using a version greater than 2.25. After that version the gameengine parts of blender were taken out. P Key was the key to start a game.

Waaayyy after the post, but I am fascinated with thisā€¦
I made 3 copies of a mesh (a small wheel hub). I used the Join command to link them together. (Why canā€™t it be GROUP/UNGROUP?)

Okay, I want to undo this joining thing, so following your advice, how am I supposed to ā€œjust select the pieceā€¦ā€? If I select, all 4 pieces are selected.
:o

So- with all 4 pieces selected, I press P, and Blender hangs up!! %|

Question: Does this work for some of you, and not for others?

Iā€™m using V2.36 on a stupid PC, but at least I have FireFox! :-?

Select your 3-object object and go into Edit mode. RMB-select just 1 vert from the subobject you want to seperate (one of the 3 wheels). With your mouse cursor over that vert hit L and all the verts of that subobject should be selected. Press P to seperate it. It will go black. Rmb-select it and give it a new name in F9.

After selecting your mesh, hit the Tab button to go to edit mode. then press the P key and choose All Loose Parts.
If you donā€™t wish to use join, you could use Ctrl P to parent other meshes to a main mesh. Then you could move, scale or rotate the main mesh and the child meshes would follow suit. But you could still manipulate the child meshes independently.

Tried this, but not working for me. I wonder if itā€™s a glitch with my graphics card, which would not work with previous versions of Blender- (Iā€™m using latest).

I have 4 objects which I joined with Ctrl-J, and canā€™t seem to get back apart.

You say ā€œGo into edit modeā€¦ā€ Do you mean open the model file, and go into Edit mode without selecting anything?
I have several objects on a few different layers. On the layer Iā€™m working with, there are other objects besides the joined parts Iā€™m having trouble with. I go into edit mode, and the 4 objects highlight themselves! I wonder if itā€™s because thatā€™s the last group I was working with?
Iā€™ve tried the various Lā€™s and Pā€™s with no success.
One thing Iā€™ve found NOT to doā€¦ Donā€™t do ā€œPā€ā€¦ System hangs every time [!]

If I could get my wish on the Blender Wish List, Iā€™d wish for an easier way to undo a Join.
I guess I can delete the vertices to the 3 copies I made, and make more, but thatā€™s kind of crude. :expressionless:
I do have a feeling it has someting to do with my system characteristics.

EDITINGā€¦ I went back and put the 4 troublesome obects into a separate blend file (using append).
VIOLA!! I separated them!! I think my problem in the main model file has something to do with multiiple layers, or ???

Pressing P in object mode doesnā€™t hang Blender, it starts the game engine. Just hit Esc to exit it.
