How much do modellers/ computer artists get paid?

Hey

Im wondering how much game artists/modellers and people like that, gennerall get paid to work (average)

thanks

It really depends on what you do, how good you are at it and where you do it. It is extremely hard to give an average due to the amount of possible variables affecting salary.

You can get some sort of idea by checking ILM salaries (1999-2003) at http://www.animationguild.org/_Contract/Contract_h/_ILM_CBA99_03.html and then projecting it to match 2008 (add inflation). The salaries seem to go from around $15 per hour to $50. Of course it is possible that there are exceptions to that into both directions.

Yeah, you could either be doing some short/cheap render for some very small business or working with Pixar on their next big movie.

That’s what comes with wanting to become an Artist whether it be 3D animation, Drawing, Writing, etc.

Also in the gaming industry it is known that artists generally get paid substantially less than programmers

Eesh, does that include concept artists?

not sure about games but ussually 30 to 60 an hour depending on experience. its really about your skill level and what you can demand for pay.

Good to know, thanks!

thanks guys:D. good answeres, The pay is better than what i thought it’d be.

and the average pay is higher in california then any other state in the US

=D would be nice to live there

The average cost of living there is probably also higher then in most other states

read that, it is advice from the guy you will be asking for a job if you make it eventually.

housing and gas are higher used to be higher, groceries and stuff were about the same. i haven’t been there for a while but some areas of cali have been hit by the mortage crisis hard, rents may be much cheaper. any money is better than no money. with gas prices even that may not be much more. i haven’t worked there for a fw years tho.

Nah, everything is more expensive here for sure. The pay isnt really high enough to make up for that either(though that may change pretty soon here). And with the highest gas prices int eh nation, we dont get off in that area either.

But its Cali, so its generally worth it

Woo its nice to see a another Californian! Lol.

It depends on where you live. At my mom’s house the gas is 10-20 cents more than where my dad lives. I know 10 cents isnt very much but for gas it is. But where my dad lives the price goes up and down 10cents everyday (no joke). And that also forces everything else up.

I like to live here when its not summer or winter lol. Because in the summer its HOT! and winter its freezing.

Ok back on topic…Like people have said it totally depends on experience and quality.

In the UK I started out as a junior modeller in XSI on 18k

been at 4 games companies and same number and more as 2d/3d guy or typicla designer, or web guy, in other type of companies (design, software, etc)

It depends a royal lot on the country. I wont say which is mine but is not certainly usa, canada, uk, holland, where salaries are 3 or 4 times higher…here’s is so poorly considered that in many companies I earned practically same amount I did if I had not even a career, studies. let alone the master and experience. In some countries, in $ terms, it plays extremely poor. Here I recommend ppl pick any other job. But have friends shouting at me going to those countries, where they went and stay. Not long ago, read in some averagely trusted source (I saw like that, sorry, lost the link) that world average on (experienced) game artist was 75k us dollars a year. Dunno, not in games lately (but yep graphics) , but that “average” is quite above what I used to earn, even being cosindered “senior” in several profiles, and also knowing me going out of company would cause some huge problem. There are places where working in a bank, admin, or some traditional company , pay way way better.
But in USA, Canada, etc. Is probably quite a nice deal. Dunno. From there I only know what old co-workers (but in no other type of companies I have had better luck with firendship  ) tell me.

30k to 80k in video games for character modelers.

Yeah game modelers should expect to start out at 30k, BUT you could make more if your more skilled.

Now if your starting out as an intern or something similar, they will pay you based on skill level or past experience (usually they consider experience for interns things like coursework).

If you get in somewhere like Day 1 Studios, Epic, Valve, etc… they usually pay a lot more starting out, BUT they expect you to be a top notch artist.

Oh man, Id love to work at valve…

Aren’t internships generally non-paying? I thought they were mostly for experience/your resume, and they might take you on if you were good enough. Yes/no?
