I am wondering if anyone can tell me, or help point me in the right direction in regards to what features/capabilities cycles currently has and whats its missing. I took a quick look around the web but didn’t find anything specific.
I know that cycles currently isn’t complete, however I am starting work on a new project and since we won’t be done the concept/design and early modeling stages until after cycles has been officially released I’m not to worried about that. I would just really like to use cycles for this project, so to get familiar with it I was hoping to use it for a personal project that I am working on.
My main concerns are about the ability to do render passes and render layers, particle/hair and volumetric lighting, and some compositing capabilities, as these are features that I haven’t noticed (or at lease figured out) in the current version of cycles that I have.
If anyone can help me out it would be greatly appreciated.
I would recommend playing around with it. Also some people have been able to extend functionality, by mixing Blender Internal layers into their Cycles Renders. It might not be the solution, but it’s worth exploring.
I’ve been fooling around with the idea of combining both types of rendering into a work flow, because Cycles does do lighting “more like I’m used to,” which is to rig-up light boxes in a photographic studio, but more-subtle lighting situations can leave you with solutions that “don’t converge” (for lack of a better term …) quickly enough or well enough. Yet.
