How Should I Cut These Holes?

So I was trying to figure a good way to cut these holes in my mesh without the boolean modifier, because with subsurface and smooth shading, it looks wack because of all the n-gons. Do you have any tips?
Thanks

!

I’d just make a texture with holes

Two ideas (edit: involving boolean modifier):
How about activating “Auto Smooth” (Mesh property tab) and change the angle?
Or how about marking your holes edges as sharps (also requires auto smooth)?

This usually solves wacky looking normal shading… at least it does it for me.

Thanks, will try it out!

To make the Boolean work you could also try cutting across all the holes with the knife tool before applying the modifier. Booleans will always mess up your topology but if you are okay with that this is a way you could make it look fairly good.
