How should I go about creating audio for my animations?

Hi,

Is there an Ardour-like (opensource) audio editing program that supports video files? I’d need to create an audio track for my animated short but it seems as if I can’t open any video files inside of Ardour, which makes creating audio tracks quite impossible. Or is there some other way?

Thanks alot,
Mats

You can do it using Blender’s sequence editor. The only problem is that Blender cannot multiplex sound and video, so once you have done the syncing of the sound you need to press Mixdown to convert it to a .WAV file, which can then be added to the video using a utility such as VirtualDub.

Couldn’t open audio: No available audio device

That’s all I get - won’t play in the sequence editor window… The files play when played from within the playback buttons though.

And another thing. Can I change volume levels and such in Blender? As an IPO curve maybe?

Aah, sry, my specs =)

Ubuntu 5.10, using KDE 3.5.1, AMD64

And you can use Audacity for effects for your wave files.
It’s similar to Sound Forge.

If you’ve used Ardour then you should be familiar with Jack. There is a jack client called xjadeo that plays back video in sync with the jack transport so that you can use just about any jack audio editor for video. (That is, as long as the audio program can be set as the jack transport master)

I’ve never used it, so I’m not sure what video formats are supported or how well it works. http://xjadeo.sourceforge.net/

Here’s a pic of it being used with Ardour: http://sourceforge.net/project/screenshots.php?group_id=131926&ssid=21127

Thanks for the tip, I’ll try it asap.

In case someone else is having same troubles: this got solved, thanks to Alexander Ewering on the mailing lists. I had to disable game sound in my prefs - the game engine had a hold on my sound device, so it wasn’t available for the sequencer. After this everything works ok in the sequencer.
