How to add vertices and edges to a face.

Hi there,
I am new to Blender and 3D animation. Videos in youtube are my teachers. Last day i reached here . How to add more vertices and edges to a face. Please help me. Thanks in advance.

Select edge/face and W / subdivide
Look in toolshelf (shortcut T) or F6 to adjust subdivide settings
