How to "apply" a rig?

Hello Blenderartists community!
I want to do a freeze image with a rigged mesh in the scene. I want to rig it how I want it to be and then make a non-animated mesh back out of it, because I want to edit it in edit mode, which would be impossible (?) with a rig (because it wouldn´t to the rigging in edit mode). How could I “apply” the rig?

If you want to create a static pose, then duplicate the whole thing to another layer. Rig and mesh objects.

The one on the left is the original rig and mesh. The right is the duplicate. It was posed, and the armature modifier was applied to the mesh. Once that was done, I simply deleted the duplicate rig. Leaving the mesh as a static object.
