how to create a walk-path for walkcycles?

hello…i have just finished animating a walkcycle for my characters, but i noticed that though they may be good walkcycles, they are STILL only walking in place…so my question is: is there some kind of way that i can create a walk-path for my characters so that they move across the screen during the walkcycle? and if so, how am i supposed to do it?

New walk features in CVS (upcoming 2.43) are a great improvement over the old “stride path” feature.
