How to cut holes?

I’m trying to cut a hole for a sink using box select/with and without face select but it’s not coming up.

Here’s the mesh:

And here’s what i am trying to do:

You’re not supposed to be selecting anything, you’re supposed to be adding loops. Use CTRL+R and add an edge loop. THEN you select vertices.

The reason you can’t select anything is because there’s nothing to select yet.
