How to efficiently animate metaballs?

I’m trying to create an animation with metaballs, but it takes years for me to just switch between frames. Is there a way to either bake the metaball animation or replicate a similar effect without metaballs (or some other alternative)? I have an example of what I’m trying to go for below.

I guess you would need to create a fluid simulation.
