Hi, i somehow struggle to push this project forward. What do you use as placeholder to somehow fill the machine space, space around wheels etc.
Thanks in advance!
If you modeled using the mirror modifier, you could turn off the other half. Then draw the wheel well profiles (as a new object) on the inside with face snapping, then turn off snapping and extrude those inwards. Ditto for the interior compartment. Moving them a hair inwards after that will also help with anything showing or possibly poking through from the outside side. The face snapping thing is also a good way to start with any interior panel meshes, as that solves alignment issues for the edges that meet with the exterior.
As far as any mechanicals that may be visible? Usually the most noticeable is suspension stuff. You may have to do your homework and bite the bullet on figuring out what to model for that. (Different ways of doing it on real vehicles too.) The under-body stuff can be a bit of a problem, particularly since it’s not something usually seen unless you have access to a lift. (Often it’s just made-up.)
Engine is only if you want to show it. Modeling the radiator is usually good enough, as that’s commonly the most prominent thing to be visible through the grille or air intake.
Hey pauljs75. This is not one but load of very useful advice. I will use the snaps to make sure there is no gap between meshes.
Thank you very much!
This.
It’s harder to model something if you don’t understand it’s underlying form. Sometimes you have to put on your engineer hat and figure out how stuff works or how it is put together. I often start a car model by studying the frame, for example.
This is why you learn about muscle and bone groups in traditional life drawing. It helps you to better conceptualize the form.
