How to get smoke that looks more like the OpenGl render?

I followed the blender manual wiki’s smoke steps, and got my smoke on… but my smoke looks way, way more detailed and thick in the OpenGL render, with grey AND black.

In the normal render, it looks so different, it’s amazing. Where the black is (in OpenGL render), it’s transparent, and it looks way less detailed. And a blah medium gray.

What can I do to get something like the look I see in the OpenGL render? Thick smoke, white and grey and black.

(I’m doing a Fire Safety instructional with this. I’d use the OpenGL render if it rendered colored smoke.)

Thanks for your help,
