How to make a material in BI that emits light?

I’ve made materials that have emitted light in Cycles; now I’m trying to do it in BI.

I’ve created a material where I’ve raised “Emit” to a fairly high number. I’ve tried various combinations of the Cast checkboxes. The material ends up looking “bright” but it doesn’t appear to be casting its light on anything.

What are the basic steps for creating a material that emits light in BI?

under world settings enable ‘indirect lighting’ and set gather to ‘approximate’…
your material needs some emit value too, that’s correct
don’t expect it to look like in cycles though
