as the title says, how do I make a square hole in a subdivided surface,Blender keeps trying to make the edged rounded
Ahh yes, I didn’t think of that… Cheers
Still not neat, my sides are recessed a bit. I’ve tried a few extra cuts but still no joy
Hi,
There are a couple of ways, the 2 most common are:
-
Put edge loops around the hole area and that will make the subsurface modifier keep the area more square.
-
Use Edge Creases, that will also tell the Subsurface Modifier not to round the selected edges. If you tab into edit mode and press CTRL+E with and edge selected you can select crease and then drag the mouse around to increase and decrease the crease amount, sharpening of softening edges that are being subsurfaced.
Attached is a blend file demonstrating how to do a square hole on a 2d and 3d plane using both control loops and edge creases.

Ahh that’s what I’m after, thanks guys, creasing the sides and the edges works, btw, 2.5 uses Shift-E for creasing
Ooops sorry yes I was away from blender when typing this up, my fingers know the right keys even if I dont
Handy tip for Shift+E, thats direct to edge crease. Now I dont have to go through all the option in the Edges menu, awesome! Thanks Hatchnet
there is also a slider for edge crease in the n panel (if that’s what it’s called.)
Ha, I have this thing where I use an Internet browser and keep trying to use middle button to shift the page around.
